Dialysis

When Appetite Is Low, but Nutritional Needs Are High

When the kidneys fail and dialysis becomes necessary, nutrition suddenly becomes one of the most important aspects of treatment. However, maintaining the right balance can be challenging.

Before starting dialysis, many patients are advised to limit their protein intake to reduce the workload on the kidneys. Once dialysis treatment begins, however, nutritional requirements change significantly.

The major shift: Why protein is important during dialysis
When undergoing dialysis, the body's protein requirements increase considerably. This is mainly due to two factors:
Dialysis treatment results in protein loss: Both haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis remove not only waste products from the blood, but also valuable amino acids and proteins.
Increased breakdown of muscle mass: Kidney disease and dialysis place stress on the body, which can increase muscle breakdown and, consequently, protein requirements.

Protein is not the only important nutrient during dialysis. Adequate energy intake also plays a crucial role in supporting the body's functions and maintaining muscle mass. If energy intake is too low, the body may begin using protein as an energy source and break down muscle tissue to meet its energy needs, increasing the risk of malnutrition and physical decline.

Many people experience nausea, changes in taste, and fatigue during dialysis, which can make it difficult to eat enough. When appetite is reduced while protein and energy requirements are increased, unintentional weight loss may occur, affecting strength, physical function, and quality of life.

Therefore, it is important to focus on both energy and protein intake to maintain a good nutritional status during dialysis.
